This week, 16 HS^2 students started the Fire and Rescue Workshop. This is another one of our outreach opportunities with our partner Lake Country Fire and Rescue (LCFR). In this experience, students get a taste of what happens at the FireHouse as well as learning valuable skills such as: gaining CPR certification, donning firefighting gear, forcible entry, EMS skills, and tackling the obstacle course.
Students spend the first week of the workshop at school learning about fire and rescue and CPR, and then the second week learning on the job at the FireHouse.

Congratulations to Lexi S. who earned PERFECT SCORES on the Advanced Placement® (AP) Research Exam. The title of my research was "The Effects of Pure Zinc Oxide Compared to CeraVe Mineral Sunscreen On The Ability of Algae to Undergo Photosynthesis".
Organic sunscreens are banned in many tropical hotspots, including the Hawaiian islands due to their negative impact on coral reefs. As a result, inorganic (manmade) sunscreen is seen as the safe option and dominates the market. My research investigated how safe inorganic sunscreens actually are. Using algae, which has a symbiotic relationship with coral, I tested the photosynthesis rate of algae when exposed to the active ingredients present in inorganic sunscreens. My data showed that in an average sized lake, the human use of inorganic sunscreen is detrimental to the photosynthesis of algae, and thus, the health of coral reefs.

The title of my research was "Analyzing the Effectiveness of Reducing Wake-Boat Induced Shoreline Erosion Through Various Forms of Geotextile Material".
The problem I aimed to address was the increase in shoreline erosion in midwest lakes due to the abundance of destructive wake boats and their waves. I created a wave flume to model a small-scale lake environment and perform my study. I used coconut coir fiber for the geotextile to create sandbags, logs, and mats, testing which one was the most helpful in protecting the shoreline. In the end, the mat showed the most success.

Two HS^2 Students Earned Perfect Scores on the Advanced Placement® (AP) Research Exam. Lexi Strickland and Anna Sueflohn were among 357 students (out of more than 30,000 nationwide) to earn this distinction. Their extraordinary accomplishments highlight the ongoing efforts to support academic excellence in the Kettle Moraine School District. They also speak to the incredible learning environment provided by our High School of Health Sciences, which was recently named the best high school in Wisconsin by US News. We are so proud of Lexi, Anna, and all of our AP students and teachers. AP courses and exams provide opportunities to take college-level courses, and earn college credits and placements, while still in high school. We will be featuring an interview with Lexi and Anna in tomorrow's Laser Focused, so watch your "in-box" to learn more about the wonderful things that are happening at KM!

Our new platform combines all of our communication tools into one environment, saving us time and money; making us more efficient; but also, allowing us to utilize a system that works well on mobile devices and provides the features users have come to expect. The first day of school is always an exciting time. This year, the District Office leadership took a field trip to visit with teachers and students. It is always great to get out of the office and into classrooms to share in our students' learning. The high school and middle school students were already delving into subject matter and getting settled into their routines.
The Kettle Moraine School District is formulating a new strategic plan. As part of this process, we cordially invite you to join us for an opportunity to participate in a World Cafe to inform the district's strategic planning.

Summer Academy is filled with classes that allow students to learn, while experiencing many wonderful activities. Mr. Tenhover's (Papa T's) fishing class is a great example. The students get to fish each day and enjoy the beauty of being on the water.
KMSD held their Strategic Planning & Visioning Kickoff Meeting July 26! Twenty one individuals were invited to participate on the KMSD Strategic Planning Team (SPT) and all were in attendance. The purpose of this meeting was for the team to:
meet their teammates, clarify the project scope and team responsibilities, understand the strategic planning process, develop the cornerstone of group process (group agreements), and prepare for the World Cafe in September.
