NATIONAL HISTORY DAY AWARDS!!! Two KM students won the bronze medal at an international history competition at the University of Maryland. Krin B. and Emma M., both of HS^2, earned this distinction with their documentary, "The Repeal of the Fairness Doctrine: An Irreversible Turning Point in American Media," arguing that the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine was a pivotal event in American media. The doctrine had been the subject of national debates about its constitutionality, and its repeal marked a significant shift allowing media to become unregulated and manipulated by outside interests. They earned top honors from a group of nearly 500,000 students from multiple continents, with 2,500 students advancing to the national level. Avery G. and Faye M., of KMMS won the state competition in the junior group documentary category in April with their documentary, "Bruce Springsteen's Historic Concert in East Berlin on July 19, 1988." They claimed that this concert was a significant catalyst for cultural and societal rebellion, contributing to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. It was one of several turning points that toppled a government, ended the Cold War, and transformed the global landscape. NHS involves presenting a process paper, bibliography, documentaries and being interviewed by a panel of judges, including professors, historians, and legislators. This completes a year-long project for these students. Mational History Day is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year!

MENTORING IS ELECTRIC!!! Mrs Olson's 8th grade Computer Science class just completed their circuits unit which elaborated on careers in electrical engineering and as electricians. Mr Lirette from Pieper Power visited the class to share his career as an electrician. He showed students the various wiring he works with, as well as breaking down the contents of his truck and explaining the tools of the trade. He also discussed the importance of safety and the precautions that must be taken when working with electricity. His presentation put our circuit unit into perspective for our students and helped them gain a better understanding of future opportunities in this industry.

KMMS STUDENTS EXPERIENCE HANDS ON LEARNING OF CARDIOVASCULAR PROCESSES!!! Mrs. Wroblewski's and Mrs. Kobus' seventh grade Discover and Navigate science students got the unique experience of dissecting pig hearts with the guidance of an industry expert. Kiely Page sells cardiovascular devices for Boston Scientific and instructs physicians on how to use stents and other devices. Kiely taught students the anatomy of the heart, blood flow, main arteries, and the nuances of cardiology. Students were excited to learn how to dissect, touch all four chambers, identify the aorta and vena cava, and gain insights into various medical careers. We are so thankful for Ms. Kiely Page's expertise and for her mom, Mrs. Kelly Page, for connecting us with her. This was great practice for students as they learn body systems through labs, interactive demos, models, readings, and now dissection!

HELP SUPPORT KM'S INVESTMENT IN THE ARTS!!! We are currently renovating our 30 year old auditorium to address concerns over safety, comfort, and production quality. The upgrades will take place over the summer and, like our other facilities projects, there will be opportunities for sponsors to help us meet our goals and provide quality venues for our students. We are offering a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities, including a buy-a-seat campaign and founder's circle, as well as tiered sponsorships and naming rights similar to our athletics facilities. Please visit kmsd.edu/fa to learn more about these opportunities, or reach out to ericksok@kmsd.edu. These advertising/sponsorship opportunities are tax deductible and we appreciate the support of our KM Community as we commit to meeting the needs of our students for many decades to come!

Dietmar Schultke spoke to KMMS students about his firsthand experience living behind the Iron Curtain, his longing for freedom, and his exhilaration when the Berlin Wall finally fell. He explained how he realized, at their age, that he was living under a fascist regime in East Germany and how they controlled all of the information he received. Schultke, now residing in reunified Germany, found his way to Kettle Moraine Middle School thanks to two sixth-graders, Avery G. and Faye M. Intrigued by his research on the fall of the Berlin Wall, they discovered a lecture he had given at a German museum on YouTube. Through a Google Meet online call, the girls interviewed Schultke for their National History Day project, which ultimately led to his visit to the U.S. and his talk at the middle school. The girls' documentary, which includes Mr. Schultke, focuses on a single rock ‘n’ roll concert that inspired the young East Germans to challenge the government and bring down the wall. Their video, one of three at a regional competition, will be competing at the state level in Madison on April 20th.

NATIONAL TEACHERS HALL OF FAME!!!! Mr. Kaldhusdal is one of only five teachers from across the United States to be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame for the class of 2024. Ironically, two came from southeast Wisconsin. Terry learned of the honor during a surprise announcement at Kettle Moraine Middle School. The event was attended by his current sixth grade students, the forensic team he advises, and many colleagues and friends from throughout his time in education. Former students Emma Manion and Krin Blegen, both in HS^2, spoke eloquently about how he has supported their growth, made them critical thinkers, inspired them to become better citizens, and instilled a pattern of lifelong learning. Look for more information soon in an upcoming Laser Focused and Capturing KM Video!
