Laser Focused is the Kettle Moraine School District's weekly digital newsletter. It features brief news updates from throughout our elementary, middle and high schools, as well as community or district information. It also includes Capturing KM, which is a video about the most prominent news item of the week, typically hosted by our Superintendent. The KM bowling team talked strategy and equipment with us at Jay's Lanes as they prepare for post-season competition. The team is coed, and is open to both middle and high school students. The sport is fun and competitive, while providing opportunities for students to gain valuable skills in a lifelong sport.

The long-awaited grand opening of our auditorium went off perfectly despite the weather. We had a great turnout and were able to thank the many individuals, families, and businesses who made this project possible. The students performed their "greatest hits" from the year with a show that encompassed a wide variety of acts from our music and theater programs. We are so excited to share this amazing new venue with our KM Community!

The Art of Writing is a unique opportunity for select students from all over Wisconsin to spend the day exploring the Milwaukee Art Museum and using that inspiration to create their own personal works. Sunday at 11:59pm is the deadline for students to submit their completed projects. A panel will determine which pieces are represented in the 2024 digital publication.

KM sculpture students collaborated with their counterparts in metals II to design and build metal artwork for the high school. These learning partnerships provide different groups of students with new perspectives and insights and tend to produce incredible results! Into the Woods opens tonight Thursday December 12th at the new KMHS auditorium. We talked with the cast about this entertaining and elaborate production and it sounds amazing. We will have performances at 7:00pm Thursday through Saturday, then a 2:00 show on Sunday!

Dousman Elementary fifth graders traveled to the State Capitol and the Veteran's Museum where they enhanced their learning with interactive tours. The students also enjoyed a discussion with Justice Hagedorn, a KM parent, about the inner workings of the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the importance of the judicial branch in our state government.

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Skretta's class visited a farm to learn about all of the different animals. Then, they expanded their learning into a showcase event. The young learners worked with their high school buddies to create 3D animals from recycled materials and shared how their various animals live.

Our elementary schools celebrated Veteran's Day with concerts, letter writing, speeches, and artwork to honor those who have served. We'd like to thank the many veterans in our KM Community for all that you have given to your country.

KMHS has launched a new flag football team in a league with a number of local schools. The girls are extremely talented and are undefeated at midseason. You can watch them play Sunday at 4:00pm -vs- Mukwonago at Muskego's indoor field house!

I interviewed the equestrian team, prior to their return trip to the state championship, to learn a bit more about their events and how the competition works. The Lasers won it all last year and finished fourth this year.

The pep band played for a packed house at the first event in our newly renovated auditorium. The atmosphere of excitement and celebration built as visitors entered the redesigned venue, but it was the updated lighting, sound, and fly systems that really stole show.

Each year, HS^2 students assist with vision screenings at all of our elementary schools. This week, they were at Cushing Elementary gaining valuable experience with patient care and basic exam procedures.

The annual color run is a wonderful opportunity to get out, enjoy the weather, and get really, super, colorful!! This year's event was more popular than ever, raising about $10k for the Wales Elementary Campus PTO. Thank you to all of the staff and families who participated in this amazing event.

The Kettle Moraine School District is a leader in providing valuable opportunities for students to earn college credits and develop industry skills while in high school. This Capturing features the AP Capstone program and the unique skills it helps students develop.

Cushing fifth graders helped out at Belfré Kitchen at the end of last school year. It was a great experience, allowing students to take an active role in raising money for their school while learning more about the restaurant business.

Each year, students design a special gift for our retiring teachers. This most recent group of retirees received a beautiful handmade vase, created by Mrs. Prokop's students. The vases were filled with fresh floral arrangements and delivered by our administrative team. I'd like to share a special thank you to all of the students who contributed and to our amazing educators who are currently enjoying retirement!

Spring and military signing day, along with some academic athletic awards, was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. Eric Larson, Tyson Grunewald, Elijah Kolstad-Woods, and Connor Price committed to military service. WIAA ScholarAthletes, Alison Abhold and Miles Burchardt were awarded, along with Classic 8 Scholar Athletes!

This annual event is such a fun, creative way to experience different methods of creating pottery! Students from Mrs. Prokop's class gathered in the parking lot to fire their pottery using the ancient Japanese style of raku. The pieces are fired outdoors, then transferred to a closed metal container containing paper or sawdust. These materials ignite and create soot which modifies the glaze and creates rich, dark deposits.

The Kettle Moraine Middle School Showcase was a student-led array of exhibits that was both entertaining and informational. Each student created an exhibit on something that was meaningful to them. This included building impressive products and developing detailed presentations. The result was a well-attended event that had parents and community members walking the halls to discover something new at every turn.

We are currently renovating our 30 year old auditorium to address concerns over safety, comfort, and production quality. The upgrades will take place over the summer and, like our other facilities projects, there will be opportunities for sponsors to help us meet our goals and provide quality venues for our students. Kindergarten students in Mrs. Skrettas class worked with Mrs. Yaeger’s high school art students on a monster project that improved storytelling through art and collaboration. Kindergarteners created and drew monsters, writing stories about them. The high school students brought these monsters to life and came back to give the students their monsters.

Our Kettle Moraine elementary music teachers produce a musical each year featuring KMMS students. This year's adaptation of the fan-favorite Annie is truly delightful and the level of talent in these young performers was impressive.

We've all seen plenty of solar eclipse videos, but we've not yet seen it through the eyes of KM students! Many of our classes took time from their day to experience the eclipse firsthand and it was a wonderful learning opportunity.

Mr. Kaldhusdal is one of only five teachers from across the United States to be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame for the class of 2024. Ironically, two came from southeast Wisconsin. He learned of the honor during a surprise announcement at Kettle Moraine Middle School.

Each year, fifth graders at Cushing Elementary explore exhibits on the Revolutionary War in conjunction with the Historical Society. Then, students research and create their own museum exhibits depicting the various characters who were instrumental to this moment in history.

KM Boys Basketball is Playing Marquette in the State Championship in Madison Tonight at 8:05pm!!! We are hoping for a huge KM Nation turnout to cheer the boys to victory!

Laser Tech and Laser Bots earned spots in the state competition. The teams build and program their robots around a precise set of assigned tasks that change annually. They compete with a second partner team against two other combined teams to earn points, advancing as they win and adopting new partners in each round.

We went backstage to explore this Engaging Who Done It. Dr. Plum met with the cast of Clue and discusses the plot, performance, and set. The play will run March 8th and 9th at 7pm, and March 10th at 2pm. There is also a sneak peek at the end of the new auditorium project that will be starting this summer!

Signing day is a very special occasion in the Kettle Moraine School DistrictThis winter, we had 12 student athletes sign with their respective universities, including a record nine players from football. We spoke with staff and students to learn more about the meaning behind signing day! Special thanks to Andy Ksobiech for putting this event together each season.

Explore students made close to 1700 Valentines and delivered them to every student, and a lot of staff members, at the high school. Students applied themselves through writing, math, and fine-motor skills, all of which unfolded into a discussion on philanthropy. It was nice watching them get caught up in the act of giving as they shared their creations.

This year's event allowed students to build their own race cars from recycled objects, batteries, wiring, motors, and switches. Students learned how to wire and solder, and experimented with the basic principles of construction and aerodynamics. The event was created by Mrs. Olson and facilitated by some amazing community partners and KMHS volunteers.

This capstone event allowed students to demonstrate their proficiency and share their learning. It was very apparent that students had come away with a solid grasp of the basic elements of patient care and were excited to apply those competencies to their future career goals. Every student who participated is following through with the CNA certification test! Thank you to the instructor, Laura Edwards, and WCTC for partnering with us.

GLOBAL FALL SHOWCASE!! Global Students Share Their Learning with the KM Community! Each semester, students investigate a topic of interest through an inquiry research process and present their learning in the form of a final defense, sharing highlights of their project at a culminating community showcase event.  In these inquiries, students explore a variety of content areas to demonstrate high levels of critical thinking and application of their learning.

4K Fair!! The 4K fair is a wonderful opportunity to explore all that KM has to offer our young learners! This year, the event was held at Cushing Elementary, and all of our schools, partner sites, and wrap care providers were in attendance. The open house forum allowed families to tour a classroom, speak with educators and administrators, and attend a presentation to learn more about the many options that are available.

SNOW DAYS!! To say today is the "real deal" is a bit of an understatement as we all dig out from 12-14" of snow! Please exercise caution as you clear snow and avoid travel if possible. MAGEE SURVIVAL SKILLS!!! Magee Elementary Students spent the day with instructors, volunteers, and HS^2 students sharpening their survival skills in the outdoors while applying their learning in the classroom. The observations gained will be used to develop a survival guide that they will share with other classes. Students learned orienteering, constructed shelters, built fires, and learned basic fire safety.

FIRST RESPONDERS FEAST!!! KMHS put on a fantastic brunch for Waukesha County first responders and staff. The event brought our community together and showed our appreciation for the amazing support they provide. The brunch was provided by KM culinary students who selected recipes, budgeted their meal plan, prepared dishes, and served brunch at stations.

GLOBAL HOSTS LEADERSHIP DAY WITH THE BUCKS!!! KM Global students showed their aptitude for leadership as they planned, facilitated, and even emceed this fantastic event that gathered students from all over the state. Leadership Day with the Milwaukee Bucks (sponsored by WASC, MATC and the Bucks) had its largest attendance ever, bringing together approximately 1,200 middle school and high school students.

36TH ART OF WRITING!! Students gathered from all over the state to inspire their writing through art and had their work critiqued by experienced writers. The conference was held at the Milwaukee Art Museum and included grades 3 through 12. It was co-sponsored by KM and the Milwaukee Art Museum. There were 85 KM students who participated and 526 overall participants.

KMMS ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLY!!! KMMS students and staff gathered to play games, build school spirit, and just have some fun together before Thanksgiving break! The middle school held it's first assembly in about a decade, and it was met with a great deal of excitement. Students competed in games by grade level and were challenged by KMMS staff.

RAILWAY BUDDIES!!!! Magee's Railway Buddies program is a mentoring opportunity where older students develop friendships with their younger buddies. All of our KM schools focus on collaboration and forming relationships. This is done within and between grade-level cohorts. It also extends to partnerships with students of different ages, and even different schools.

ANYTHING GOES!!! We went backstage with the cast, crew and orchestra to learn more about this rousing production! It was a whirlwind as they put the finishing touches on the set and ran through hair and makeup. Anything Goes has a fun energy that is definitely apparent when you talk to them about the performance.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL AT STATE!! We'd like to congratulate the team and coaches on a fantastic season that earned them a spot in the State Championship at the Resch Center in Green Bay today. Four fan buses followed the team down to cheer them on. Unfortunately, they were defeated, but it was a great run!

PUMPKIN PAINTING!!! Dousman students had a fun afternoon painting pumpkins thanks to the PTO and Pleasant Valley Farms! The weather held out just long enough for all of the students to get outside and craft their masterpieces. They worked in groups, collaborating with their buddies and classmates to explore creative ideas.

LEGENDS & LORE!!!! Each year, KM Perform Students contribute their amazing talents to this fantastic, frightful, celebration at Old World Wisconsin! We had such a great time filming Capturing KM last Saturday at Legends & Lore. This spooky, journey through scary stories from another time is the perfect Halloween outing.

WALES/EXPLORE COLOR RUN!! The powder was flying and everyone was having fun at the Color Run! Students, families, and staff came out in droves, despite the weather, for the annual event. The rain gave way to sunshine right as the event started, making the color burst tremendous. $6500 was raised for the new playground project!
